    Post and rail

Post and rail fencing is a widely used fencing solution for equestrian and agricultural purposes. It can help to restrict the movement of cattle and livestock or be used as an animal deterrent. The rustic fencing style is also an attractive and traditional choice for homeowners in rural areas, especially those who do not want the view from their property obstructed by more obtrusive fencing styles, such as closeboard.

Although more commonly seen in the agricultural sector, post & rail fencing is becoming increasingly popular within the domestic fencing sector too. This type of fence is best suited for more rural locations and field boundaries and can be erected on level or sloping ground. Post and rail is a generic term used to describe any fencing system comprising of solid timber rails. There are a number of common variants such as; sawn, cleft and half-round.

Post and rail fencing is pretty much the standard method when a fence is needed in a more country type surrounding. It can be used to separate fields, and with the addition of stock fencing, can be used to contain animals such as sheep and cows. Cleft chestnut posts are more commonly used, although sawn can also be used to create a tidier look.

Despite the visual simplicity of post and rail fencing, there are still various options to choose from, for example, as farm fencing for horses and stock, rural boundary fencing, fencing for sand schools or garden fencing.
